A scheme to hijack voter cards ahead of Anambra State’s November 8 Governorship election has been uncovered.
Individuals are allegedly collecting National Identification Numbers (NINs) from unsuspecting residents, using the information to fraudulently issue new voter cards in their own names and those of accomplices.
Dr. Law Mefor, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, confirmed the plot in a statement.
The statement says investigations, including inquiries with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), show no legitimate NIN revalidation process is underway in the State.
Instead, these individuals are reportedly acting as agents for desperate politicians, exploiting personal data to impersonate voters.
This scheme allows perpetrators to vote in place of legitimate citizens, while denying the rightful owners access to the electoral process by altering the voter database.
The Anambra State government urges anyone asked to provide their NIN to contact the State Security hotline, 5111, to report the individuals involved.
