Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, at the weekend in Lagos, promised Team Delta a rosy package before the Christmas celebrations should they top the medals table at the ongoing National sports Festival.
Governor Uduaghan who gave the charge during a visit to the camp of the team and a number of venues for the different events, stressed that they must go for gold at all times.
“As you compete whether at medals level or not, put in your best as if a gold medal was at stake. You do not have to slack at any point in time”, he stated.
He charged the Team Delta contingent at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival to be fully focused on their mission as adequate reward awaited every victorious outing.
The Governor commended the high spirit of the athletes which he said made possible their current top position on the medals table, and directed that athletes who lost in their events be retained in the camp as supporters for those still in the contest.
Apart from the Amina Hostel camp of the Team Delta at the University of Lagos, Uduaghan who was accompanied by the Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Mr Amaju Pinnick witnessed power lifting for the physically challenged, female weight lifting, Scrabble, Tennis events as well as the practice session by the track and field team.
Meanwhile, Governor Uduaghan posited that hosting of the national sport festival should be the responsibility of the Federal Government at all times.
Speaking while fielding questions from journalists at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos, he said that the fiesta should be hosted by the Federal Government at the national stadium, Abuja.
This, he noted will augur well more for the nationhood and unity of the country even as other individual sports competitions may be taken up by the states fo the federation.
The Governor also canvassed support for the idea of throwing open the National Sports Festival as it would enhance competition and bring out the best for the country.
