Nigeria, October 11, 2015, (Blank NEWS Online) –
The first Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha is dead.
He was said to have died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State.
Alamieyeseigha was arrested at London Heathrow Airport in September 2005, on suspicion of money laundering.
He however jumped bail in mysterious circumstance as he surfaced in his village in Bayelsa state barely three months after his arrest.
During the week, facts emerged that the British Government is seeking Alamieyeseigha’s extradition to London to face money laundering trial he abandoned 10 years ago.
Mr. Itse Sagay (SAN), chairman of Anti-corruption committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari, also confirmed the extradition request, saying Britain was right to do so since the offence was committed in London.
Aged 62, Alamieyeseigha was granted presidential pardon by his erstwhile deputy, former President Goodluck, over his conviction for corrupt practices as governor of Bayelsa.
A family source reportedly alleged that recent request for his extradition by the UK may have triggered blood pressure believed to be the cause of death.
