The recent barrage of unwholesome articles against the member representing the Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency, Rt Hon. Ngozi Okolie has raised concerns about the fairness and motives behind assessing his performance, particularly less than two years into his tenure.
As a member of the Labour Party and a former PDP chieftain, Okolie has already faced significant challenges, including a contentious election and subsequent legal battles, which he ultimately won in court. However, the narrative of media blackmail appears to have taken precedence.
The Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency has been fortunate to have had distinguished representatives in the National Assembly. From Hon. Paschal Adigwe to Hon. Ned Nwoko, Hon. Joan Onyemaechi, Hon. Godwin Elumelu, and now Hon. Ngozi Okolie, each of these leaders has left an indelible mark on the constituency.
Hon. Paschal Adigwe is known for his contributions to education and healthcare development in the constituency. Hon. Ned Nwoko, a seasoned politician and lawyer, held various public offices and significantly advanced infrastructural development during his tenure. Hon. Godwin Elumelu, a veteran lawmaker, served in various capacities, including a stint as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. Hon. Joan Onyemaechi was a trailblazer who empowered women and youth during her time in office.
Presently, Hon. Lawrence Ngozi Okolie has highlighted his achievements, including providing scholarships to students, supplying desks and tables, installing solar power, and constructing infrastructure alongside his robust legislative functions.
However, Hon. Okolie faces several challenges. Firstly, the contentious factionalisation surrounding his election was unexpected, with many believing the Labour Party could not defeat the PDP or APC. This victory has since been marred by controversy. Protesters have claimed, in one breath, that he has no projects and, in another, that he is claiming projects. To date, they have failed to specify whose projects he is allegedly claiming, thereby inadvertently lending him credibility. This situation may further reposition the lawmaker to undertake more projects in 2025, ahead of the 2027 elections, without compromising his pace in delivering dividends to his constituents.
Secondly, the election petition and subsequent legal battles, although short-lived, have aimed to divert attention from leadership pursuits, policy implementation, and project delivery. Despite these distractions, he remains focused on his mandate, concentrating on legislative and oversight functions while lobbying for better representation.
As a newcomer to the House, Hon. Okolie must navigate the intricacies of legislative politics, build relationships with colleagues, and master the complexities of lawmaking.
In light of these challenges, it is crucial to afford Hon. Lawrence Ngozi Okolie the same time and space given to his predecessors for healing, growth, and proving himself. Constituents and stakeholders should offer their support rather than rush to judgement, recognising that his success is inextricably linked to the development and prosperity of the constituency.
Several factors warrant consideration. Firstly, the people of Aniocha/Oshimili have high expectations from their representative, given the successes of his predecessors. However, conditions can improve if he is provided with a serene, enabling environment and cooperation. Secondly, Hon. Okolie must learn the intricacies of being an effective politician, a process that takes time and experience. Lastly, as a first-timer in the Green Chambers, he must build relationships with his colleagues, which is essential for effective representation.
Hon. Lawrence Ngozi Okolie deserves patience, support, and understanding as he navigates the complexities of modern politics. Constituents and stakeholders should recognise his contributions to scholarships, infrastructure development, and solar power initiatives, without losing sight of his legislative duties. Success is a collective responsibility, and together, without conflict, they can achieve greatness for Aniocha/Oshimili.
