NIGERIA civil war veteran and renowned author, Brig.General Godwin Alabi Isama (rtd), has laid out a four-element pathway to sustainable development of the Nigerian nation.
Isama, at the launch of the ‘Memoirs Of A journalist In Government Media’ authored by the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), The Pointer Chapel, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo, at the Press Centre, Government House, Asaba, said that though Nigeria had a good future, it required an infallible pathway to sustainable nationhood.
He listed the elements of the pathway to include a credible constitution that would yield a credible polity; an efficient police force that guarantee national security on a sustainable basis; an efficient and time-compliant justice system and a virile press that will be ceaselessly motivated for effective public enlightenment.
According to Gen Isama, who was once interim Military Administrator of Mid-West State, “once we get the constitution and the politics right, every other thing will fall in place, in spite of religious and other concerns,” while the enablement of the Nigeria Police Force for enhanced efficiency such that it could guarantee, on a sustainable basis, national security would help the cause of effective nation-building.
He added that the constitution of joint military/police security outfits was a disastrous option that should be discouraged.
Isama stressed that a potent judicial system was vital for the entrenchment of sustainable nationhood since it represented the benchmark for the delivery of justice, on a cost-efficient run.
He described journalists as the last of the four elements of the pathway which required all-round enablement to constantly enlighten Nigerians on developments in the polity to enable the citizenry make consistently well informed decisions.
