The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State Council is set to hold its maiden media week.
The union has slated al lecture titled ‘’Journalism; Why Ethics Matter’’ for Tuesday December 11th 2012 to be held at the Orchids Hotel, Asaba.
Prominent Constitutional lawyer and social activist, Festus Keyamo, Esq is billed to deliver paper at the event under the distinguished chairmanship of Prof Sylvester Monye, Special Adviser to the President on Performance Monitoring and Evaluation.
According to the Chairman of the Union, Comrade Nobert Chiazor, the media week becomes imperative in our bid to add value to the practice of journalism in Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
He said the state council is identifying the area of need of our members concerning training and retraining, saying to get to the top of one’s career, definitely one needs a lot of training and exposure.
While maintaining that the program would be unique, he claimed in this age journalists have to be weary of what to write as the gatekeeper in the information process just as he said the union in the state cannot thank the members enough and the state government for their unflinching support.
The Chairman confirmed that there are various activities lined up for the event. ‘’We intend to have praises and prayers at St Mary Vianni Catholic Church, DBS Road in Asaba, awareness rally from NUJ Secretariat to the Permanent Site of the Union at Marian Babangida Road, Asaba , opening ceremony/lecture, visits to camps of flood victims on Sunday 9th, Monday 10th, Tuesday 11th December respectively’’.
Continuing, ‘’We shall cap it up with Gala Night/NUJ Awards at Orchids Hotel starting 7 00pm on Wednesday 12 December to celebrate practicing journalists in the state and country, some corporate institutions and few individuals we are proud of their contributions towards the progress of the nation in their endeavors,’’ he claimed.
