DELTA State Council of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has raised alarm over potential crisis in Udu local government area of Delta State as a result of the Council Chairman, Hon. Solomon Kpomah constituting a parallel driver’s union.
Speaking with journalists in Asaba, the chairman, Delta State Council of NURTW decried interference by the Udu Council Chairman which he said was capable to lead to the breach of peace.
According to him, “I feel sad that I am talking to you about what is happening at Udu local government area, but, it is a sad development where a local government chairman could be functioning as a Union leader, allocating units where people should work or not; this is a new development that should not be encouraged, the NURTW is working with local government officials with defined roles, but, in Udu, the functions of the branch chairman is being usurped by the local government chairman which is wrong.”
“The situation if not well handled could lead to breach of peace as there is already tension between the Union members under the leadership of the local government chairman and those who are under the leadership of our recently sworn-in branch chairman of Udu “A” branch of our Union, Comrade Elvis Akpokona,” he said, adding, “we want to make it clear that politicians should play their politics while we run our affairs as a Union and accord respect and necessary dues to constituted authorities as enshrined in our Union constitution.”
Chief Obi called on government at all levels and security agencies to wade into the issue to avoid crisis where the NURTW would be mentioned, reiterating, “Udu Chairman wants crisis and our members wants peace but, we don’t know how long the local government chairman will continue to constitute a parallel executive of the union.”
Reacting to the allegations, Hon. Kpomah in a telephone interview said what he desires is peace and his to boost the internally generated revenue of the Council.
According to him, “my business is to collect my revenue, I don’t want to be involved in the politics of NURTW, but, they must operate in such a way that there will not be crisis,” adding, “what I am bothered with is how to generate revenue in Udu Council because, we are finding it difficult to pay salaries, so, we have decided to look inward.”
