DELTA State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has allayed fears over the completion of the multi-billion naira Asaba-Ughelli dual carriage way project.
This is just as the State Government has commenced repairs and maintenance works on the Asaba/Ogwashi-uku/Kwale/Ughelli road project so as to curb the effects of erosion.
Speaking during an unscheduled inspection on the on-going remedial work along the section C axis of the road in Ogwashi-Uku Thursday, July 9, 2015, Governor Okowa said road was an important project because it linked the East- West Road connecting Delta State to other states in the South-South region, disclosing that he was still being briefed about the project.
According to him, “this is an important road linking the East West road from Asaba to Ughelli, we cannot abandon the project, for section C and section A of the project, we are going to find out what caused the delay in the execution of the project and know what to do.”
“From what I have gathered so far, we are going to review the entire process in Section C, we were told it is an eight-lane road in some area, I don’t think the road is that busy for us to have an 8-lane road, we need to bring it to a size that is realistic and affordable, it is our duty to ensure that the road is motorable,” the Governor said.
On the failed portion of the road, Senator Okowa said, “I asked the DLA (Direct Labour Agency) to intervene despite the fact that there is a contractor for the project and you can see that they have done a lot of work, they have done the filling and the road is passable.”
The Site Engineer, Fred Agbanure who conducted the governor round said that flood water was being properly channelled, and more equipment would be moved to the site to ensure speedy completion of the work.
He also disclosing that within the next seven days, asphalt would be laid on the road.
Also Speaking earlier when he led a team comprising the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Dona Umukoro and top ministry’s officials on an inspection visit to the Asaba-Ogwashi-Uku-Kwale Section of the road on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, the state Commissioner of Works, Chief James Augoye explained that gullies created by erosions has caused a lot of damage on the road adding that measures were being put in place to stop further damages on the road.
He emphasized that “The governor of Delta State Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa is very passionate and concerned about our roads especially this part of the road which has been affected drastically by erosion and he has given the directive for the immediate repairs which will begin today”.
Chief Augoye disclosed that the Direct Labour Agency(DLA) would begin immediate excavation of the erosion damaged portions of the road while the ULO Construction Ltd. would assist by “putting permanent measures through the construction of drainages which will take care of erosions by directing water from the roads because with the current situation the road will experience further degradation during this rainy season” he added.
He gave the assurance that the work will be concluded very soon so as improve vehicular movement during the forthcoming rainy season.
